The Karachi Traffic Police have launched a citywide crackdown on wrong-way driving, introducing new enforcement measures and equipping officers with handheld gadgets to issue fines on the spot.
Traffic DIG Pir Muhammad Shah said the move comes in response to a growing number of motorists violating one-way traffic rules across Karachi. He added that the use of modern devices will help improve enforcement efficiency and ensure better compliance.
As part of the initiative, authorities plan to deploy a dedicated Traffic Flow Unit on major roads to manage congestion and curb violations. Officials have identified 36 locations in the city where wrong-way driving is most frequent, and targeted enforcement will be carried out in these areas.
The DIG noted that while the e-challan system has improved enforcement, it is not yet fully operational across the city. He pointed out that the faceless tracking system has not been implemented on University Road Karachi, limiting automated monitoring in some areas.
He further said that manual challans have been phased out following the introduction of the new system, though it presents both advantages and operational challenges.
In a related development, authorities announced that fines for lane violations on Shahrah-e-Faisal will be strictly enforced starting June as part of broader efforts to improve traffic discipline.
