Power Generation Up 6.3% in March But Loadshedding Still Active in Pakistan

Pakistan’s power generation rose to 8,939 GWh in March 2026, up 6.3 percent year on year (YoY) and 16.2 percent month on month (MoM), according to Topline Securities.
On a cumulative basis, total generation during 9MFY26 reached 93,130 GWh, showing a 3.3 percent increase compared to last year.
At the same time, the average power generation cost dropped to Rs. 8.1 per unit, down 15 percent YoY, while the nine-month average stood at Rs. 8.2 per unit, down 5 percent.
Hydel power saw the biggest increase, rising 62 percent YoY to 2,105 GWh, making it the largest contributor with around 23.5 percent share in the power mix.
Local coal generation also increased 7.5 percent, while imported coal jumped sharply by over 126 percent, indicating higher reliance on coal-based generation overall.
Gas-based generation rose modestly by 3.6 percent, while nuclear output declined around 11.7 percent YoY, despite a strong MoM recovery.
One of the most notable changes was in RLNG-based generation, which fell sharply by 67 percent YoY as RLNG shipments declined due to the Middle East war.
Among renewables, wind generation increased by 34 percent, while solar saw a slight decline.
