Govt Very Close to Provide Discounted Petrol in Pakistan Despite War Pressure

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said the government is accelerating relief measures for lower and middle income households as rising global oil prices, driven by the Iran war and the broader Middle East crisis, continue to push domestic fuel costs higher.

The key development is the government’s move to finalize a subsidized fuel support scheme for motorcycle and rickshaw owners, aimed at shielding vulnerable segments of society from the latest surge in petroleum prices.

Chairing a high level meeting to review the impact of the Middle East conflict on Pakistan’s petroleum stocks and public relief initiatives, the prime minister was informed that the federal government is working closely with provincial authorities to complete the registration process for eligible motorcycle and rickshaw owners so they can benefit from the planned subsidy scheme.

According to the official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the registration framework is being finalized to ensure targeted distribution of relief, particularly for daily wage earners and low income commuters who are most exposed to fuel price increases.

“We will not leave the economically weaker section of the society alone in this hour of difficulty,” the prime minister said, reiterating the government’s commitment to support the most affected households.

The relief initiative comes as international oil markets remain under pressure following supply disruptions and fears surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route. The resulting price shock has intensified inflationary concerns in oil-importing countries such as Pakistan, where transport and logistics costs directly affect household expenses and food prices.
