Detailed Report
Work on the Kutchery Chowk remodeling project has reached around 75 percent, with the Punjab Highway Department beginning construction of eight bus stops for electric buses along the corridor.
Punjab Highway Department Sub-Divisional Officer Masab Ali said the bus bays are being developed as part of plans to expand electric bus operations under Phase-II, which will connect District Courts with other areas of the garrison city.
He said sites for the bus bays have been identified at key locations, including Fatima Jinnah Women University, District Courts main gate, Adiala Road Square, Lal Kurti, Rashid Minhas Road, Old Airport Road and Jhelum Road.
A senior district administration official said 45 electric buses are currently operating on seven routes, with plans to increase the fleet to 120 after completion of the project. He said more than 10 routes had initially been finalized, but only seven were made operational due to ongoing construction at Kutchery Chowk.
The official said that after completion of the project, routes will connect areas including Rawat T-Chowk, Koral Chowk, Soan Bridge, Motorway and Rawalpindi Railway Station Saddar, improving access to Raja Bazaar and downtown areas.
The official added that bus lanes have been incorporated into the design to help manage traffic flow, while the Punjab Mass Transit Authority is overseeing the electric bus system and the Regional Transport Authority has already allocated routes.
