Pakistan Enforces New Reduced Speed Limits on Motorways and Highways

Pakistan has introduced reduced speed limits on motorways and national highways as part of efforts to conserve fuel and improve energy efficiency, following directives from Shehbaz Sharif.

According to the National Highways and Motorway Police, the revised limits are now in effect nationwide. On motorways, cars and light vehicles are restricted to 100 km/h (down from 120 km/h), while buses and heavy vehicles are limited to 90 km/h (previously 110 km/h).

On national highways, speed limits have been reduced to 80 km/h for cars and light vehicles (from 100 km/h), and 65 km/h for heavy and passenger vehicles (from 80 km/h).

Authorities have also launched a nationwide awareness campaign to ensure compliance. Officials say the move is aimed at reducing fuel consumption, improving road safety, and supporting broader energy conservation efforts.

Experts note that even a 10 km/h reduction in speed can significantly improve fuel efficiency, helping lower overall oil consumption. The decision comes amid rising global oil prices and ongoing energy challenges.
