A luxury vehicle worth Rs90 million has been purchased for the chairman of the Senate of Pakistan using the Senate’s budget, Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani has confirmed.
According to sources, the expensive vehicle has already been delivered to the Senate Secretariat after being bought through the Senate’s allocated funds.
When contacted by Express News, Gilani confirmed the purchase and said the vehicle had been ordered in May last year.
“Yes, we purchased the car from the Senate budget, but it was ordered last year,” he said, adding that the purchase was made using savings from the Senate’s previous budget.
Gilani further stated that he had attempted to return the vehicle due to the country’s current economic situation, but officials informed him that the car had already arrived.
Earlier in June, Muhammad Aurangzeb told lawmakers at Parliament House that the Senate chairman and the speaker of the National Assembly receive a monthly salary of Rs2.15 million.
At the time, Khawaja Asif criticised the increase in salaries for top parliamentary officials, calling it “economic obscenity.”
The purchase of the luxury vehicle has also drawn attention as Pakistan continues to face economic challenges and calls for government austerity.
