Punjab Considers Hike in Arms License Renewal Fees

The Punjab government is reviewing a proposal that could significantly increase renewal charges for firearm licenses across the province. Under the suggested rates, renewing a shotgun license could cost Rs. 25,000, while pistols and revolvers may see renewal fees of Rs. 50,000. Semi-automatic rifles could be renewed for Rs. 100,000, and automatic rifles at Rs. 250,000.

No official decision has been announced yet.

Some sources say the recommended increase is part of an effort to strengthen the arms licensing system and make it more effective. The proposed changes will be taken up for consideration by the provincial government in the coming weeks.

Earlier this year, the Senate Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control raised concerns about arms licenses being issued to non-tax filers.

According to official figures, around 32,000 licenses were issued to individuals who do not pay taxes, while only 3,000 were given to registered taxpayers.

The committee urged authorities to suspend licenses of non-tax filers and stop issuing new permits to individuals who fail to comply with tax laws.
