Detailed Report
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Faisalabad has prepared a PC-II project worth Rs. 141 billion to address the city’s decades-old sewerage problems in a sustainable manner.
The initiative aligns with climate change targets and follows the Master Plan prepared by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for 2028.
WASA Managing Director Saqib Raza said many unplanned areas of the city lack proper sewerage networks, causing wastewater to accumulate in open plots. Over time, the wastewater seeped into the ground, disturbing the soil structure and contaminating groundwater.
To address this problem, WASA has begun emptying wastewater ponds by installing dewatering sets and diverting the wastewater to the nearest sewerage networks or disposal points.
According to Raza, this initiative is part of the Punjab Development Package, which focuses on improving existing sewerage infrastructure. However, many peripheral areas of Faisalabad have remained without proper sewerage coverage until now.
Raza also noted that the project considers heavy rainfall conditions, citing last year’s 300 millimeters of rainfall. To manage excess water, recharge wells are being constructed across the city.
So far, three recharge wells have been completed while 10 more are under construction, with a total target of 13 to 15 wells using WASA’s own resources.
The managing director added that WASA is playing an increasing role in climate change efforts and urban water management, noting that development packages worth Rs. 10.5 billion and Rs. 12.5 billion have already been allocated, while additional PC-II proposals are currently being prepared.
