Apple Foldable iPhone May Bring Split Screen Apps to iOS

Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone is rumored to launch later this year with a wide inner display that uses a 4:3 aspect ratio. A new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman now reveals more details about the software experience expected on the device.

According to the report, Apple is preparing several improvements to iOS to take advantage of the foldable’s larger inner display.

The device’s inner screen is expected to support layouts similar to those used on the iPad. These changes may allow apps to run side by side and introduce navigation elements such as iPad-style sidebars.

Gurman said the foldable’s internal display will be roughly the same size as the iPad mini. This has prompted Apple to develop new app layouts and navigation tools designed for the larger screen.

However, the device will not support full windowed multitasking like the iPad, and it will not run iPad apps. Despite the tablet-like interface, the foldable will still run iOS rather than iPadOS.

The report notes that the phone will include simpler multitasking features instead of the more complex desktop-style interface seen in iPadOS 26.

The foldable iPhone is expected to use a new display technology that significantly reduces the crease on the inner screen while improving durability.

Leaks also suggest the device will include a hole-punch camera on the cover display as well as another hole-punch camera on the inner screen.

Other rumored hardware features include a dual rear camera setup and a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button.

Some reports also suggest that Apple could brand its first foldable smartphone as the iPhone Ultra.
