Detailed Report
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is examining a proposal to build a second ring road in Peshawar as traffic pressure continues to increase in the city, particularly in its southern areas.
The project came under discussion during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, where officials presented initial details of a proposed outer ring road for southern Peshawar. According to the briefing, the road would stretch approximately 31 kilometers and pass through several localities in the southern part of the provincial capital.
Officials informed the meeting that the preliminary cost of the project is estimated between Rs. 50 billion and Rs. 60 billion. The proposed road is intended to divert vehicles away from congested urban corridors and improve overall traffic flow.
During the meeting, the chief minister directed authorities to ensure the inclusion of suitable interchanges so that commuters can easily access the new route. He also instructed officials to consider the city’s long term transportation needs while finalizing the design of the project.
Afridi further asked the relevant departments to coordinate with the National Highway Authority for the construction of an interchange near the Peshawar Bus Terminal, which would allow vehicles to reach the terminal directly without entering the city.
The meeting also reviewed the possibility of adding a dedicated track for the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit system along the proposed road to strengthen the city’s public transport network.
