NADRA Cancels 4.2 Million CNICs

Detailed Report
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has cancelled approximately 4.2 million Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) that belonged to individuals already recorded as deceased in provincial civil registration systems.
According to the authority, the action was taken after identifying cases where deaths had been officially registered by families with local civil authorities, but the CNICs of those individuals had not been cancelled in the national database.
This situation created inconsistencies between provincial death records and NADRA’s identity database. After verifying the information through civil registration records, the authority proceeded with the cancellation of the relevant CNICs to prevent potential misuse.
NADRA said the step was taken to maintain the accuracy and security of the national identity database and to reduce the risk of fraudulent use of identity documents belonging to deceased persons.
The authority acknowledged that in rare situations a death might be reported incorrectly or deliberately by a relative. In such cases, if a citizen’s CNIC has been cancelled after being mistakenly declared deceased, the individual can visit the nearest NADRA registration centre.
NADRA said the identity card will be restored immediately after biometric verification, and no fee will be charged for the restoration.
