Detailed Report
Up until recently, it was rare to find the words "sporty" and "Toyota" in the same sentence. That's changing, and quickly. These days, with the help of some partners and a big push from chairman Akio Toyoda, Big T has been pumping out some very satisfying driver's cars. Three have found a place on at least one of our annual 10Best lists in the past decade—with the full trio making the cut in 2023.
If you're looking for some fun on a budget, these everyday-usable performance vehicles combine Toyota reliability with prices that are relatively easy to swallow. Here are our three faves and what you'll likely have to pay to pick up a pre-loved example.
A successful partnership with Subaru has resulted in that company's BRZ as well as the Scion FR-S (RIP) and its successors, the Toyota 86 and GR86. Toyota's second-gen version, which now wears Gazoo Racing badging, has a few advantages over the original. Improvements include a larger engine with a little more power and more torque that's available earlier in the rev range, a stiffer chassis, and a few more aluminum body panels in place of steel parts to offset the added structure. Oh, and it sounds better than the old car, too.

Since its 2022 debut, the GR86 has made the 10Best list every year and seen regular minor changes (2024, 2025, 2026), but the basic formula endures: a small rear-wheel-drive coupe with a beautifully tuned chassis and just enough practicality to be a daily driver if you want. As long as you're not picky about special editions, you can pick up a used Toyota GR86 in good shape with under 50,000 miles for around $24,000. More than half of the used GR86s on Car and Driver's Marketplace come with an automatic transmission—it's a little slower but just as fun to toss around, and there are a few features, such as adaptive cruise control, that you can't get with the manual car.

The Supra name returned for 2020, and the car wearing that iconic badge made the 10Best list right off the bat, with repeat performances in 2021 and 2023. At different points over its latest generation, the GR Supra has been available with four- and six-cylinder power and both manual and automatic transmissions. Our pick is of course the inline-six with a stick shift, but you really can't go wrong here.
Considering the GR Supra's high-ish retail price when new—a minimum of $59,495 for 2026—low-mileage used examples trade for pretty reasonable money. An older four-cylinder automatic can be had for around $30,000, while the inline-six/manual combo, which came later in the production run, pushes pricing past $50,000. The only real money-related caveat is that the Supra is mostly a BMW Z4 underneath. That's a boon for performance—we like driving Toyota's stiffer hardtop version better anyway—but can mean higher costs when it comes time for maintenance or repairs.

The newest addition to Toyota's GR stable is also a solo project from the Japanese automaker. It took the crazy turbocharged three-cylinder from its GR Yaris rally car and dropped it into a more North American–friendly Corolla hatchback body. Fun ensued, and the GR Corolla made the 10Best list in its first year on sale, 2023.
This one has Akio Toyoda's fingerprints all over it, so much so that it was offered in a special Morizo Edition that borrows its name Toyoda-san's racing alter ego. That variant is a bit hard-core for everyday use, though, as it goes without seats, power windows, or speakers in the rear. (We suppose your dog wouldn't mind, though.) Even the most plain GR Corolla hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with a manual transmission. An automatic option joined the roster for 2025, and it's both quick and fun to drive—just not quite as quick or as fun as the three-pedal car.
Because these cars have been sold in limited quantities, the selection of used examples isn't huge. That said, owners appear to have saved most of them for special occasions, as the average odometer reading is somewhere around 15,000 miles. A clean GR Corolla starts around $30,000, while the newer automatic models command $37,000 or more. Not bad for something in a practical shape with two sets of doors and a roomy cargo area.
