Detailed Report
Internet connections in Pakistan have reached 5.10 million in 2026, marking a major increase from 1.9 million in 2024.
The growth reflects a significant expansion in the country’s digital infrastructure, with a substantial rise recorded over the past year. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a review meeting focused on the expansion of the Information Technology (IT) sector and government efforts to increase IT-related exports.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted the strong potential of Pakistan’s youth in the IT sector and stressed the importance of utilizing this talent for national development. He also emphasized improving the performance of Easy Service Centers to enhance public service delivery and increase government efficiency.
A key topic discussed during the meeting was reducing the digital divide between urban and rural areas. The Prime Minister called for cooperation at the provincial and district government levels to ensure equal access to IT opportunities and benefits across the country.
Pakistan’s IT exports are projected to reach between $4.5 billion and $4.6 billion during the current fiscal year.
The country also achieved a major milestone with the auction of 5G services, which generated a record-breaking $509 million in revenue. The auction was described as the largest globally since 2016.
The meeting also highlighted several developments in the IT sector, including the successful Indus AI Week held in February 2026. The event featured more than 100 international delegates across 30 cities.
In addition, internet connectivity has been expanded to public schools and health units in Islamabad. The installation of free internet hotspots in the city is also in its final stages.
The government is also establishing e-learning pods in key locations, including Syed Pur Model Village and Fatima Jinnah Park, to improve public access to digital education.
