Detailed Report
Dairy farmers in Karachi have demanded a Rs. 100 per liter increase in the official milk price, citing a sharp rise in business costs, 24News reported Sunday.
According to the Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association, dairy businesses can no longer operate at the current official rates because fodder, electricity, petrol, and other expenses have increased significantly.
The association has written a letter to the Commissioner Karachi, asking the administration to revise the official milk price.
Association office bearer Shakir Gujjar said the dairy sector is facing a severe financial crisis. He added that farmers cannot continue their operations under the existing price structure.
Dairy farmers claimed that the prices of fodder and milk-related inputs have increased by 75%. They said they will soon announce a future plan of action after internal consultation.
Mubashir Qadeer Abbasi also warned that milk supply in Karachi could be affected because dairy farmers are facing a shortage of working capital.
The demand, if accepted, would put further pressure on consumers already facing high food prices. However, dairy farmers argue that rising input costs have made the current official price unsustainable.
