Detailed Report
Punjab schools and colleges may begin summer vacations earlier than usual as the provincial government reviews the academic calendar amid rising temperatures and heatwave concerns across the province.
Punjab Minister for School Education and Higher Education Rana Sikandar Hayat said the government is considering starting summer vacations from May 22 and reopening educational institutions on August 2.
Speaking to Geo News, the minister said a final decision on the proposed schedule would be taken on May 11 after reviewing the weather situation and consultations with relevant departments.
He added that the Punjab government is also discussing a proposal to organize summer camps during the vacation period.
The development comes after the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued a weather advisory warning of above-normal temperatures and rainfall during May, June, and July.
The PDMA warned that plain areas of the province are expected to face a higher risk of heatwave conditions during May due to above-normal temperatures. Last year, the Punjab government announced summer vacations from May 28 to August 14 before later extending the holidays until August 31 due to extreme weather conditions.
