Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday launched several development projects in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), including renewable energy initiatives, Safe City projects, and Daanish Schools, while also distributing free solar panels, laptops, and business loan checks to youth.
Addressing a ceremony in Gilgit, the prime minister inaugurated a 100 megawatt solar power project and launched the distribution of 58MW worth of free solar panels for domestic and commercial consumers through a digital balloting system. He said more than 50,000 applications were received and around 15,000 beneficiaries were selected on merit.
Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to complete the solar project by mid 2027, saying the initiative would help reduce energy shortages in the region, particularly during winters.
The prime minister also laid the foundation stones for four Daanish Schools in Sultanabad, Bunji, Ghanche, and Skardu. He said the schools would provide modern educational facilities, including smart classrooms, e libraries, free meals, and boarding facilities, with free education for girls.
He also inaugurated Phase II of the Gilgit Safe City Project and announced the Skardu Safe City project, directing authorities to ensure modern security standards.
During the ceremony, the prime minister distributed laptops to students under the Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme and provided checks under the Prime Minister’s Youth Agriculture and Business Loan Scheme.
