Govt Approves New Power Package to End Uneven Electricity Charges Nationwide

The federal government has approved a big power sector reform package to eliminate regional disparities in electricity transmission and system-related charges across Pakistan.

The decision was taken in a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, chaired by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Muhammad Aurangzeb.

Under the approved framework, electricity network usage and transmission charges will now be applied uniformly across all power distribution companies, including K-Electric.

The move is intended to ensure equal treatment of consumers nationwide and remove long-standing differences in cost structures between regions.

The ECC also approved measures to improve efficiency in the power sector and strengthen market-based electricity trading mechanisms.

In addition, the committee endorsed arrangements to support industrial energy supply stability, including approval of gas allocation for the revival of National Steel Complex Limited (NSCL).

The facility will be allowed to use gas for industrial operations and captive power generation at applicable tariffs, subject to availability.

The ECC further directed relevant authorities to ensure consistency in future energy-related approvals through a standardized policy approach.
