Detailed Report
The federal government has announced a national IT census, the first of its kind, to document the complete digital workforce and its range of technical skills in the country.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) will jointly conduct the census with the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) across the country.
According to the details, both institutions will work together to collect detailed, structured data specifically focused on young people’s digital skills throughout Pakistan.
The census will record the full national IT workforce, including freelancers, video editors, and employees working across the call centre industry in the country.
Call centre workers will be categorised separately, with the census recording the specific skill sets each category of worker currently possesses nationwide.
Officials say this census will, for the first time, give the government reliable national data to inform its IT policy decisions and future planning.
The initiative is also expected to improve overseas employment prospects for Pakistani IT professionals by presenting verified, structured data to international employers.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has initiated development of a National Open Data Ecosystem to improve accessibility and usability of government data for citizens.
Officials said the system will organize and share public data in structured formats to support transparency, innovation, and evidence based decision making across various key economic sectors.
The ministry has invited proposals from local and international participants, aiming to incorporate diverse expertise and global best practices in designing and implementing the system overall project.
A pre proposal meeting is scheduled for mid May, with submissions expected by mid June, and evaluation focusing on quality, cost, and strong technical capability for selection.
The initiative, supported by the World Bank under the Digital Economy Enhancement Project, is expected to drive innovation, improve public services, and create opportunities in technology sectors.
