Detailed Report
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System, paving the way for a modern and integrated public transport network in the city.
The approval came during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister, where officials gave a detailed briefing on the project and presented proposals aimed at improving travel facilities for residents.
During the meeting, directions were issued to connect all areas of Gujranwala to the metro train through feeder buses in a bid to reduce traffic problems across the city.
Under the plan, a 17 to 19-kilometer section of the track has received in-principle approval to pass underground. Two tunnel sections will also be built to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
According to project details, the mass transit system will stretch 31.5 kilometers from Gakhar to Eminabad. Authorities have set a 12-month timeline for its completion. The project will include 24 stations in total, including two underground stations.
In an effort to improve environmental sustainability, solar systems will be installed at every station and depot. Depots will be set up in the areas of Garjakh, Chand Da Qila and Gondlanwala. A 62-kilometre drain will also be built along both sides of the route as part of the wider infrastructure plan.
The project will further include a modern command and control center to help ensure effective monitoring and management of the transit system.
Maryam Nawaz said the project would completely transform Gujranwala’s transport culture and provide residents with travel facilities of international standard. She added that the people of Gujranwala would be given a major public transport system as a gift.
