Detailed Report
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has said temperatures in several parts of the country are currently above normal, with mild heatwave conditions expected in the coming days.
In a weather update issued by the National Weather Forecasting Centre, the department said temperatures in southern regions are 2°C to 4°C above normal. PMD said a mild heatwave is likely to develop in southern parts of the country from April 29 to May 3.
The department noted that May and June are typically the hottest months of the year, with south Punjab, upper Sindh, and southern and eastern Balochistan identified as the most heat-prone areas.
Temperatures in these regions can sometimes rise up to 52°C during heatwave conditions, while the normal range remains between 43°C and 45°C during these months. The update also said that upper parts of the country are likely to be affected by a westerly weather system from the night of April 27 to April 29 and again from May 3 to May 5.
Due to the westerly wave, temperatures in these regions are expected to drop by 2°C to 4°C during the period. PMD said it is continuously monitoring the situation and will issue further updates if heatwave conditions develop.
The department also noted that neutral ENSO and IOD conditions persist globally, while there is a 61% chance of El Niño developing between May and July.
