Heavy Industries Taxila to Manufacture Electric Buses Locally: Saving Billions for Punjab

The Punjab government has officially approved a major plan to manufacture electric buses locally. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz recently gave the final green light to this project. Consequently, Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) is preparing to establish a dedicated production unit in Taxila. This initiative represents a massive leap toward a self-reliant and eco-friendly Pakistan.

Currently, the provincial government pays roughly $220,000 to import a single electric bus. However, local production will slash this cost down to approximately $150,000 per unit. Therefore, the province will save billions of rupees. Moreover, this strategic move drastically reduces the heavy national bill on vehicle imports and drives broader economic independence.

Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) is moving well beyond basic vehicle assembly. Instead, the manufacturer is building a sustainable electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem from the ground up. This industrial shift facilitates vital technology transfer into the country. Furthermore, the new production unit creates immediate employment opportunities. It directly supports the development of a high-tech workforce skilled in EV integration.

Local manufacturing allows engineers to design transit solutions specifically customized for Pakistan’s unique terrain and climate. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has already announced plans to operate 1,500 of these electric buses across ten districts. Ultimately, rolling out these locally built buses establishes a modern transport system that lowers emissions, saves fuel, and minimizes noise pollution in expanding urban centers.
