Detailed Report
An American millionaire and big-game hunter, Ernie Dosio, has died after being crushed by a group of elephants during a hunting expedition in Gabon, Central Africa.
Dosio, a 75-year-old vineyard owner from Lodi, California, was hunting a yellow-backed duiker, an antelope species, when the incident occurred. He was in the Lope-Okanda rainforest with a guide when they unexpectedly encountered five female elephants accompanied by a calf.
Safari operator Collect Africa confirmed the incident and said the professional hunter guiding Dosio was seriously injured.
Dosio was well known within the Sacramento Safari Club and had built an extensive collection of hunting trophies over the years, including elephants and lions.
A source told media outlets that the elephants appeared to have been surprised during the encounter. The same source said Dosio’s hunts were licensed and conducted under regulated conservation practices.
He was also the owner of Pacific AgriLands Inc, a company that manages around 12,000 acres of vineyard land in Modesto. Authorities are now working to return his remains to the United States.
Last year, another American hunter was killed by a buffalo during a hunting trip in South Africa.
