PM Shehbaz Orders to Fast-Track Local Battery Production For EVs And Solar Use

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to accelerate the transition toward faster development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support the transition and ensure wider adoption across the country.

In addition, he directed officials to formulate a policy framework to make battery storage more accessible, particularly for storing surplus electricity generated from solar power and also electric vehicles as part of Pakistan’s broader energy security strategy.

Chairing a high-level meeting on energy security, the prime minister said shifting transport to environmentally friendly electric energy has become essential for future planning.

He instructed that all future government procurement for transport should focus only on electric buses and motorcycles, signaling a clear policy shift toward electrification.

Authorities were also asked to encourage local manufacturing of high-quality storage batteries to reduce reliance on imports and strengthen the domestic energy ecosystem.

Officials briefed the meeting that two pilot projects for grid-level battery storage are currently being prepared, reflecting early steps toward integrating storage solutions into the power system.
