Govt Notifies Nationwide Holiday on May 01 for Labour Day

Pakistan will observe International Labour Day on May 1, a day that recognizes workers and their role in the economy. The day, also called May Day or Workers’ Day, is marked across many countries. In Pakistan, it also brings a nationwide public holiday.

Government offices, banks, and educational institutions will remain closed on May 01. Every year, the country follows this routine, and schools and banks do not operate on this date. As a result, normal business activity slows down across both public and private sectors.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has decided to release salaries earlier than usual. This move comes ahead of the Labour Day holiday to support employees. Normally, salaries are paid on the first day of each month. However, workers will now receive their payments on April 30.

Officials made this decision because May 1 falls on a public holiday. The Finance Department coordinated with relevant authorities to adjust the schedule. As a result, government employees will have access to their funds before the long weekend begins.

In addition, the timing creates a three-day break for many workers. Friday is a public holiday, followed by Saturday and Sunday. Therefore, employees can manage their expenses better during this extended period. The Punjab Finance Department also issued clear instructions to ensure timely processing and avoid delays.

At the same time, the decision highlights the government’s focus on worker support. Officials said salary distribution before consecutive holidays remains a top priority. This step is expected to provide relief to thousands of provincial employees.

However, the government is also continuing its austerity measures. Under this plan, two days of salary will be deducted from BS-17 officers and above for April 2026. These funds will go directly to the prime minister’s Austerity Fund 2026.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister and provincial ministers have chosen to give up their April and May salaries. These steps aim to balance financial support with fiscal discipline. Overall, the measures reflect an effort to maintain economic stability while assisting employees.
