Detailed Report
Minister of State for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik has said the government has approached Qatar to provide four liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes to Pakistan on a priority basis as it would significantly improve electricity generation in the country.
Speaking to a private television channel on Saturday, the minister said discussions were underway with Qatari authorities to secure immediate LNG supplies as regional tensions continue to disrupt energy logistics and shipping routes.
Ali Pervaiz Malik explained that Pakistan maintains a long-term energy partnership with Qatar and has requested that some already-loaded LNG vessels be diverted toward Pakistan to help stabilize fuel availability. He added that if the four cargoes reach the country, power generation capacity would improve and pressure on the electricity system could ease.
However, the arrangement has not yet been finalized because multiple factors (such as maritime security risks, insurance approvals, and logistical clearances) must be resolved before the shipments can proceed.
The minister added that the regional situation remains highly fluid, particularly due to uncertainty surrounding shipping movements near the Strait of Hormuz, which has affected LNG supply chains and global energy markets.
The minister said the government is simultaneously coordinating with other partner countries under government-to-government agreements to secure reasonably priced fuel supplies and protect consumers from rising electricity costs during the ongoing energy uncertainty.
