Detailed Report
Microsoft is reportedly exploring changes to its Xbox Game Pass service, including the introduction of lower-priced subscription tiers, as new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reviews ways to expand its user base.
According to a report by The Information, Sharma is considering options to make Xbox products, including Game Pass, more accessible to a wider audience. One approach under review involves adding more affordable subscription tiers or revising existing plans.
The reported plans come after Microsoft raised Game Pass prices last fall.
PC Game Pass increased from $11.99 to $16.49, while Xbox Game Pass Ultimate rose from $19.99 to $29.99. The company also expanded features, including Xbox Cloud Gaming access and Ubisoft+ Classics integration.
Current lower-cost options include the $9.99 per month Game Pass Essential and the $14.99 per month Game Pass Premium.
Sharma is also evaluating the possibility of ad-supported tiers, which could offer lower pricing in exchange for reduced features or the inclusion of ads. Earlier reports indicated that Xbox Cloud Gaming may introduce ad-supported access in 2026.
The move comes as Game Pass growth has slowed in recent years, prompting Microsoft to explore new strategies to attract more users.
Xbox vice president Jason Ronald said Sharma is willing to rethink existing approaches while maintaining the platform’s core strengths.
The report also said Sharma has held discussions with Netflix CEO Greg Peters about possible partnerships, including bundle offerings.
Microsoft is also expanding its gaming ecosystem with devices such as the Xbox Ally handheld and the upcoming Project Helix console-PC hybrid.
The changes come after former Xbox CEO Phil Spencer stepped down last month following nearly 12 years leading Xbox and almost 40 years at Microsoft.
