Water Shortages Could Jeopardize South Punjab Mango Harvest: Farmers

Farmers in South Punjab have raised concerns over potential disruptions in river water flows, warning that reduced supply could threaten the region’s mango crop and overall agricultural output.

Growers in major producing districts including Multan, Rahim Yar Khan, Muzaffargarh and Khanewal say upstream water control measures could lower downstream availability, putting orchards at risk.

South Punjab is the country’s main mango-producing region, known for high-quality varieties that contribute significantly to exports and local livelihoods.

Farmers say water shortages could reduce yields, affect fruit quality and damage orchards that take years to mature. The mango sector supports a wide network of workers, including farm laborers, transporters and traders, making it a critical part of the regional economy.

Stakeholders have urged adherence to the Indus Waters Treaty to ensure Pakistan’s water rights are protected, warning that any prolonged disruption could impact both economic stability and the global reputation of Pakistani mangoes.
