Samsung Unveils New 200MP Camera Sensor With Major Upgrades for Smartphones

Samsung has unveiled its latest flagship mobile image sensor, the ISOCELL HPC, introducing what the company describes as the industry’s first DeepPix technology with support for 16-bit RAW output.

Samsung says the new sensor delivers better dynamic range and improved low-light performance compared with its predecessor. This should bring several upgrades to smartphone photography such as better low-light photos, improved HDR, zoom, and more.

The ISOCELL HPC is a 200MP camera sensor with a 1/1.3-inch optical format and 0.6μm pixels.

According to Samsung, its new DeepPix technology allows the sensor to capture significantly more light than the previous generation.

DeepPix enables each pixel to hold more light before reaching overexposure. Samsung says this results in brighter highlights, more visible details in shadows, and improved overall dynamic range.

The company also says the ISOCELL HPC supports 16-bit HDR. This is designed to produce cleaner images with less noise, particularly when shooting in difficult lighting conditions.

Samsung says the ISOCELL HPC can maintain HDR image quality across several in-sensor zoom levels.

The sensor supports HDR at 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x and 4x zoom. According to Samsung, this should provide more consistent image quality when users switch between different zoom levels.

The ISOCELL HPC also uses a new lens and light-guiding system designed to direct more light onto each pixel.

Samsung has also upgraded the sensor’s video capabilities.

The ISOCELL HPC can record 4K video at up to 180 frames per second, allowing smartphones equipped with the sensor to capture smoother slow-motion footage.

The combination of DeepPix, 16-bit HDR, improved light collection, and support for multiple in-sensor zoom levels makes the ISOCELL HPC Samsung’s latest attempt to improve smartphone camera performance across different lighting and shooting conditions.

The new 200MP ISOCELL HPC sensor is expected to make its debut in smartphones launching later this year.
