Google DeepMind engineer Vidy Thatte has built an experimental browser called Gem that takes an unusual approach to browsing the internet: instead of loading websites, it generates them from scratch using artificial intelligence.
Thatte first demonstrated the project on X on July 22 before releasing a TestFlight version a few days later. Apple's TestFlight listing describes Gem simply as a “generative browser.”
Unlike Chrome or Safari, Gem does not fetch a webpage directly from its server. Instead, it treats the URL entered by the user as a prompt and sends it to Google's Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite model, which generates a webpage in response.
If users enter a real website address, Gem creates its own interpretation of that site rather than simply displaying the original page. Entering a nonexistent address causes the AI to create an entirely new website based on what it thinks should exist there.
That said, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is fast enough that there is almost no practical difference between loading a conventional webpage and generating a new one on demand. Google describes Flash-Lite as a low-latency model designed for high-throughput and cost-sensitive tasks.

Gem is a side project and does not include Gemini API access itself. Users have to provide their own Gemini API key linked to their Google account.
Each URL entered into the browser generates an API request, meaning users are responsible for the resulting usage. A free API key can be obtained through Google AI Studio, although XDA's testing reportedly reached the free usage limits within two minutes, after which the author enabled billing and added $10.
Gem also allows users to change how generated websites look. XDA found nearly two dozen styles, including Dark Mode, Reader, Neubrutalist, Broadsheet, Blueprint, Comic Book, Punk Zine, Notebook, Windows 95, Geocities, Matrix, Terminal and Vaporwave.
Changing a style could completely transform a site's appearance within seconds while retaining elements such as article headlines.
However, Gem can also change the actual information shown on a page. During testing, it rewrote article text rather than simply restyling it.
The browser also generated a complete portfolio after the tester entered a nonexistent address based on their own name. However, a LinkedIn link on that generated site did not lead to the real profile. Gem instead created its own LinkedIn-style page containing invented information, including a fake follower count and details the person had never written.
The experiment shows that Gem is less a conventional web browser and more an AI-generated interpretation of what the internet behind each URL might look like.
