The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) collected more than Rs. 476 billion in taxes through electricity bills during FY26, officials informed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance on Wednesday.
According to FBR officials, the total included Rs. 351 billion in sales tax and Rs. 124 billion in income tax collected from electricity consumers across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
The committee was told that tax collections through electricity bills stood at Rs. 562 billion in FY25, Rs. 515 billion in FY24, and Rs. 313 billion in FY23.
Industrial consumers contributed Rs. 66 billion in withholding income tax during FY26, while commercial consumers paid Rs. 52 billion. Household non-filers contributed Rs. 4.82 billion, while another Rs. 1.37 billion was collected from residential consumers under Section 235A of the Income Tax Ordinance.
Of the Rs. 351 billion collected as sales tax, Rs. 269 billion came from standard sales tax, while Rs. 55 billion was collected as additional tax, another Rs. 55 billion as further tax, and around Rs. 16.5 billion was recovered from retailers through electricity bills.
